The scene opens up with an establishing shot of a classroom setting with the female and male characters sitting in class. A lesion is taking part and we get a mid-shot of the protagonist staring into space and then an eye-line match edit is used to show the female looking at the clock which is ticking really slowly (slow motion editing) with that the teachers voice becomes much slower. There is also a shot of her looking at her crush ( the male protagonist) in front of her. There is also an intertextual reference to Britney Spears song “Hit Me Baby One More Time” as she recreates the pencil smacking on the desk. We are then shown a mid-shot of her reading the book, followed by a close up of the book and then as she turns the page of the book she starts to daydream and the next page of the book illustrates her imagination where she sees a split screen shot of her and her crush talking on the phone however she is brought into the 1950’s. The camera goes into that shot and the music starts playing.
The First Two Verses: (1950’s)

· A box transition effect is used to show a scene of the male protagonist putting on the woman’s coat and opening the door for her (suggestion of him being a gentleman). (Long shot is used).

Intertextual references: Ed’s Diner, Roy Lichtenstein, Pleasantville.
The scene opens up with a Roy Lichtenstein inspired artwork of the setting of both the protagonists entering Ed Diners.
They are both shown to be on a date with a close up shot of her wiping food from his face.
Then an attractive female walks into the restaurant and the male character gets distracted by her beauty and doesn’t listen to what his date is talking about. The female blows a kiss which is shown through a 4 way split screen. The male protagonist responds with a drool which is again illustrated through a 4 way split screen. The female protagonist responds with a slap on her partners face and this is repeated twice and illustrated through a 4 way split screen.
She storms off, and he follows her home. She attempts to block him out of the house, however, he refuses this and pushes he’s way through. They end up in the living room of her house, whilst the television is playing a black and white movie. The two appear arguing, as they block the way of the television screen as the female’s character’s brother is watching the movie. This is a mirroring effect used to amplify the idea that the protagonists are in parallel to those characters on screen. A two way shot is used here. The brother becomes annoyed, therefore, decides to change the channel – an over the shoulder shot is placed here. He changes the channel, as well as changing the scene.
As the television channel changers, the protagonist warp into the television screen, where the bench scene from Annie Hall is taking place – the protagonists of the music video are now in character of the protagonists from the movie Annie Hall.
The Next Three Verses: 1970’s.
Intertextual References: Annie Hall {with subtitles} – scene whereby, protagonists of the film are seen sitting on the bench, engaging in an awkward relationship-based conversation.
The next scene portrays the bench scene from Annie Hall, whereby the lead female singer and the male love interest are sitting on a bench in a park in conversation. A two way shot is used to show this; as well as shot-reverse-shots of them having this exchange in dialogue.
The Use of Subtitles: The male and female protagonists are addressing and discussing the male’s ‘womanising ways’ and the wrong doings of it all. {Use of shot-reverse-shots and two way shots} The lead female singer appears to be singing the verses {mentioned above} towards the male individual. On the screen, it will then display subtitles of how both the girl and the boy really feel – the female protagonist expressing, such as; “Oh, just shut up and kiss me” and ultimately insulting him.
An establishing shot is then used to reveal the female protagonist’s friends/associates {4 of them} appearing to provide support her in the confliction between her and the male love interest. The girls assemble together to attempt to “gang-up” on the guy to ensure that she is getting her point across. Thus, makes a reference to the idea/revolution of Feminism that was in fact introduced in this decade – females coming together to propose their own views and values, and attempting to dominate and demonstrate the idea of equality between both sexes.
The male protagonist gets up to start running, and a chase begins to take place in the park; the lead female singer continues to sing, and an over the shoulder shot is used to show the guy running ahead – from the female’s perspective/point of view. The male trips up, and falls to the floor – a high angle shot is used {he is now at a vulnerable position}. The girls assemble and surround him. A long shot is used here. The female lead singer steps forward to confront him, and they in face-to-face with each other. There’s a close up shot of the male grabbing her arm. He pulls her, and they run off with each other. A long shot is also used here, panning into them running.
They turn a corner. He pulls her up against the wall, which is shown through a mid-camera-shot. An over the shoulder shot is framed from the male’s point of view revealing a close up view of the lead singer’s face. An extreme close up shot is placed here, as both characters lean in to kiss. A soft focus edit is then adjusted here to then display the female lead singer back in the modern day, sitting in her classroom {showing that she has been daydreaming}, as the bell rings.
